“Movin and Shakin”
About a week ago the NBA finally approved the purchase of the Detroit Pistons franchise along with holdings that came along with the team to new owner Tom Gores. Gores is a Michigan native and attended Michigan State University. Currently he is a successful business man in California as the CEO of Platinum Equity. Here is the press conference held after the big anouncement:
Since I am a DIE-HARD Pistons fan, I was excited to hear about this news. Before the previous owner Bill Davidson passed away a few years back and his daughter took over the organization, the team had reached a peak that it had not seen since the late 80′s early 90′s “Bad Boys” team who had won back-to-back NBA championships. The Pistons’ most recent title came in 2004 after an upsetting “5 game sweep” of the Los Angeles Lakers. This was a great time period in Detroit because we as citizens of the city had something to believe in and something to brag about once again.
Over the last four seasons the Pistons have taken a turn for the worst. Within the last few years the team has experienced a first round playoff loss and two seasons with records well under 500. Also there has been three coaching changes within that time period including the recent firing of Head Coach John Kuester. I’m hoping that this new ownership will spark some change for the franchise and bring the team back to the top of the NBA.
